1994 Ice Cream Olympics Underway

Ben & Jerry’s Enters Entire Smooth Line In Competition

Released: 3/10/94
Retired: 8/10/94

Waterbury, VT: The Team from Vermont has done it again, this time with the first significant entry in the 1994 Ice Cream Olympics - Smooth, No Chunks - a strong line-up with eight entrants: Aztec Harvests® Coffee, Deep Dark Chocolate, Double Chocolate Fudge Swirl, Mocha Fudge, Vanilla, Vanilla Bean, Vanilla Caramel Fudge, and the comeback of an all-time Ben & Jerry’s classic -White Russian TM (made with real KAHLUA® coffee liqueur) - all totally and uncharacteristically chunkless.

“When the smooth get chunky the chunky get smooth,” said Ben Cohen, company chairman and Smooth team head coach, when asked about the competitive field.

“When we took out all of those chunks, we were pleased to find a world-class smooth ice cream lurking underneath, ready for the stiffest competition,” said Jerry Greenfield, company vice chairman and ripple coach on the Smooth team.

The entire complement of vanilla, chocolate and coffee variations and improvisations went through intense flavor exercises and rigorous ripple development before they were fit to hit the shelves. The challenge of having Smooth pass the demanding scorecards of customer tastes was no simple task.

“Our Smooth flavors have muscle, some with deep ripples, no wimpy swirls,” said coach Cohen.

Smooth trained on custom made state-of-the-art ice cream machines. “Our ripples went through speed and endurance tests,” said Steve Burrington, Smooth team equipment manager.

The new Smooth line can also satisfy those burned out from today’s hectic pace who would rather experience their ice cream without exerting too much energy. “Sometimes I’m just too tired to chew,” said coach Cohen as he nodded off.
